Kathleen M. Bader, The Dow Chemical Company, Appointed to President’s Homeland Security Advisory Council

On June 11, 2002, ME2002 Panelist, Kathleen M. Bader, Business Group President; Corporate Vice President, Quality and Business Excellence, The Dow Chemical Company, was sworn in as a member of the President's Homeland Security Advisory Council.

At a ceremony at the White House, Bader and other appointees representing business, academic, law enforcement, and public service sectors were sworn in by Vice President Dick Cheney. The Council will provide advice and recommendations to the President on matters relating to homeland security.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to serve with such distinguished individuals in developing a strategy to protect our nation," said Bader. "Dow and the chemical industry are a critical component of the nation's infrastructure, improving the essentials of life for all people. Because of the industry's impact on society, we continue to make safety and security a top priority."

The purpose of this Council is to provide the President with advice on homeland security matters from experts outside of the federal government. The members of the Council are leaders from state and local government, the private sector, public policy experts, and the non-profit sector.

"I look forward to sharing my personal and professional insights on the issue of national security and am honored to have this humbling opportunity to help the President in assuring the safety of our great nation, its people, its principles and its prospect," said Bader.

Bader began her career with Dow in 1973 and has held a number of positions throughout the U.S. and Europe. In her current position as Business Group President, Bader oversees an approximately $4 billion business portfolio. She is also responsible for overseeing Dow's Six Sigma initiative. Bader is involved with a number of charities and non-profit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity. She earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Saint Mary's College/Notre Dame and a master's degree in business administration from the University of California at Berkeley.
