has worked in most of the hot spots of the 1990s. Her most
recent assignments have sent her to Belgrade Albania, Macedonia
and surrounding countries. She has received wide acclaim for
her extensive reports on the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
Amanpour exclusively interviewed Mikhail Gorbachev in November
1999 for the 10th anniversary of the fall of communism. She
also interviewed Jordan's new monarch, King Abdullah in May
1999 and was the last journalist to interview the King's father,
the long-reigning King Hussein, days before his death earlier
this year. She also secured an exclusive interview with Hillary
Rodham Clinton in May as well as an exclusive interview with
President Khatami in December 1997. She has reported extensively
from Sarajevo, Haiti, Algeria and Rwanda, where she covered
the civil unrest and political crises in those countries.
Having spent years on one of the most dangerous assignments
journalists have faced in recent history, Amanpour has brought
the Bosnian tragedy into context and to the world's attention.
No American network correspondent has reported as continuously
from this ethnically torn region.
Amanpour has been awarded a number of prizes, which include
the Peabody Award in Journalism, received in May 1999, the
Sigma Chi Award (SDX) in the Continuous Reporting of a Breaking
Event category for her reports from Goma, Zaire; two George
Polk Awards for Excellence in Journalism for her coverage
of Bosnia in 1994 and for her work on the CNNI special "Battle

Amanpour's Gulf War reporting also received the Breakthrough
Award from Women, Men and Media. Her contribution to the 1985
four-week series, "Iran: In the Name of God," helped CNN earn
its first DuPont award.
Her reputation as a world-class correspondent began with her
reporting on the dramatic changes occurring in central Europe
during 1989 and 1990. During her assignment in the Persian
Gulf she covered the Gulf War, from Iraq's invasion of Kuwait
in 1990 to the US bombing of Baghdad and the Kurdish refugee
crisis on the Iran/Iraq border that persisted after the cease-fire.
She also covered the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991
and subsequent war in Tbilisi. In December 1992, Amanpour
briefly left the former Yugoslavia to report live from the
shores of Mogadishu, Somalia, as U.S. troops launched Operation:
Restore Hope.
Amanpour began her CNN career in 1983 as an assistant to the
network's international assignment desk in Atlanta. She has
worked in CNN's New York and Frankfurt bureaus. She is also
a contributor to CBS News' "60 Minutes" - the first ever reporter

Journalists. This honor recognizes significant contributions
to journalism.

Josie Natori
CEO, The Natori Company
_________________________________________________________
Like all successful entrepreneurs, Josie Natori has never
allowed herself to be limited by convention or tradition.
As founder and CEO of Natori Company, Natori has built her
empire on intelligence and instinct, transforming the fashion
industry with her elegant designer lingerie.
Always a risk-taker, Natori boldly walked away from a six-figure
salary as Vice President of Merrill Lynch in 1976 and set
up her own fashion company, literally, in her living room.
Within a few years she was working out of an 11,000-square-foot
loft on New YorkÍs 34th Street with a showroom and design
workspaces.
Although she had no experience in fashion or manufacturing,
Natori intuitively understood what modern women wanted-to
look feminine but independent. She soon became known for vibrant
colors, bold patterns, and sophisticated designs. Her hallmark,
the detailing, embroidery, and appliquÚ work of her native
Philippines, remains integral to her designs. So does her
homeland, where she now employs close to a thousand local
craftspeople.
For her inspirational achievements, Natori was presented the
Galleon Award by Philippine President Corazon Aquino in 1988.
The honors have continued to accumulate: In 1998 Natori was
chosen as the New York City Partnership's Business Woman of
the Year, and she served as a delegate to the Clinton Economic
Summit Conference in Little Rock and as a commissioner to
the White House Conference on Small Business.

Marilyn Carlson Nelson
Chairman & CEO, Carlson Companies, Inc.
_________________________________________________________
Marilyn Carlson Nelson is the president and CEO of Carlson
Companies, one of the largest privately owned companies in
the world. Recognized as a worldwide business leader, Nelson
is responsible for managing Carlson's global business portfolio,
which includes service companies in travel, hospitality, and
marketing.
Nelson began her rapid journey to success in the '60s as a
securities analyst at Paine Webber. Shockingly, in those early
years of women entering the workplace, she was requested to
use the abbreviation "M. C. Nelson" on all correspondence
to disguise her gender.
But Nelson refused to be held back as a woman, rising to the
position of Senior Vice President of Carlson Holdings by 1988
and leading the company toward unprecedented international
growth resulting in systemwide revenues of more that $22 billion
in 1998.
A dynamic leader, Nelson has also devoted her boundless energy
to community programs. Most notably, as chair of the Minnesota
Super Bowl 1992 Task Force, she succeeded in the daunting
task of bringing the Super Bowl to Minnesota in the dead of
winter - an accomplishment that generated more than $100 million
for the state's economy.
A second-generation American of Nordic ancestry, Nelson has
also been active in promoting Minnesota's historical ties
to Nordic countries. For her achievements, Nelson was awarded
the Order of the White Rose by the President of Finland and
the Royal Order of the North Star by the King of Sweden. These
awards represent the highest honor these two nations can bestow
upon an individual.

Merle Aiko Okawara
President, eBay Japan
_________________________________________________________
Merle Aiko Okawara was described in a Forbes Magazine
article (1997) as an individual who climbs mountains just
because they are there. And, indeed, building a successful
business in the mid sixties in a male-oriented Japan that
favored large businesses, to the detriment of the entrepreneur,
was as arduous as trekking up Mount Everest.
A third generation Japanese born in Hawaii to a successful
businessman, Okawara was brought up in a "Can Do" environment.
The more people insisted that she could not succeed, the more
determined she became. Overcoming language and cultural barriers,
Okawara expanded JC Foods into the nation's top supplier of
frozen ethnic foods, including Italian Pizza, Indian Naan
& Curries; Arabian Pita Bread and breaded Fish Sticks
and Cheese. The company was listed over the counter in Tokyo
in 1993, making her only the second woman to achieve this
in Japan.
An American educated in the US and Europe, and having lived
in Japan for over 30 years, Okawara is proud of being a citizen
of the world. She strives to act as a bridge drawing the US
and Japan closer together by her work as governor of the American
Chamber of Commerce in Japan and member of the council of
the Japan-American Society. She attended Northwestern University
in the U.S. and has a law degree from the University of Geneva,
Switzerland. Her book, When Women Create Companies,
became a best seller when published in 1995.

and the creation of free thematic channels.

Tom Peters
Author and Lecturer, tompeterscompany!
_________________________________________________________
Author of the acclaimed business treatise, In Search of
Excellence, Tom Peters has single-handedly turned the
world of corporate management on its head. A self-described
prince of disorder, champion of bold failures, maestro of
zest, and professional loudmouth, Peters' profound effect
on corporate America has prompted The Los Angeles Times
to name him "the father of the post-modern corporation." Fortune
called him the "Ur-guru" of management. The Economist
says he's the "uber-guru." And his unconventional views led
Business Week to describe him as business's "best friend
and worst nightmare." Tom is the author of dozens of books,
including the category-defining business book In Search
of Excellence.

Dawn Riley
CEO & Captain, America True
_________________________________________________________
Whether she's on the stormy seas off Auckland, New Zealand
or behind the podium at a motivational seminar, America True
Chief Executive Officer Dawn Riley is never one to shy away
from taking the helm. It's Riley's thirst for challenge, combined
with her unequivocal determination, that have allowed her
to become the first woman in the world not only to captain
an America's Cup team, but also to manage an entire America's
Cup Syndicate.
Riley sailed into the forefront of the yachting world when
she served as the watch captain/engineer on Maiden, the first
all-women's team in the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World
Race. Indeed, first is a word you often hear about Dawn Riley:
the first woman to have an active role on an America's Cup
team, first place in the 1992 Women's cup in Italy, and one
of the first founding members of the International Women's
Match Racing Association.
In a field historically dominated by men, Riley is a world-class
sailor who defies gender stereotypes. Riley is the only American,
man or woman, to sail in two America's Cups and two Whitbread
Round the World races.
When you can find her on land, Riley serves as a consultant
for the United States Sailing Association and the Women's
Sports Foundation in addition to her America True responsibilities.

Anita Roddick
Founder and Chair of Body Shop International, PLC
_________________________________________________________
One of the most high-profile women in business, Anita Roddick
provides an inspiring example of both professional success
and personal integrity. As the founder of the Body Shop, Roddick
is responsible for a skin- and hair-care enterprise that spans
47 countries, 24 languages, and 12 time zones. Yet this British
entrepreneur remains firmly grounded in the values she established
as a "morally outraged" youth.
Roddick started the Body Shop in 1976 simply to create a livelihood
for herself and her two daughters - a survival situation that
she claims nurtured her creative thinking. In only 22 years,
her vision of high-quality, naturally based beauty products
grew from that first small shop in Brighton, England, to more
than 1,600 outlets worldwide.
Despite the unprecedented growth of her brainchild, Roddick
keeps human relations and personal values at the forefront
of the Body Shop's operations. Her passionate belief in social
responsiveness, human rights, and environmental and animal
protection can be seen throughout the company, from its commitment
to challenging beauty stereotypes to its vocal campaigning
against animal abuses in the cosmetics industry.
Recently, the Body Shop has developed a Community Trade program
that creates sustainable trading relationships with communities
in need. This means purchasing raw materials such as cocoa
butter or babassu from marginalized producers, as well as
buying massagers from India and baskets from the Philippines.
Roddick also takes considerable pride in The New Academy of
Business, which she launched in 1997 with the aim of reforming
business education for the next century.

Kate Spade
Designer/Partner, Kate Spade
_________________________________________________________
Founder of the handbag and accessories company that bears
her name, designer Kate Spade has created such a stir in the
fashion industry that she is known as the woman who "reinvented
the handbag." One of the success stories of the '90s, her
company continues to produce products that embody Spade's
unique personal style: classy, no-nonsense, with an element
of surprise.
Born Katherine Brosnahan, the Kansas City native began her
fashion career after college, when she moved to New York and
began working at Mademoiselle in 1986. When she left the magazine
six years later, Spade had developed a keen understanding
of the accessories industry.
What Spade recognized was a void in the market: a need for
classically shaped handbags in interesting colors and fabrics.
In 1993, with then-boyfriend Andy Spade as her business partner,
Spade crossed her fingers and launched a line of boxy, no-nonsense
nylon tote bags that stressed sophistication and utility.
A modern classic was born.
In 1996 Spade's fashion savvy was recognized by the Council
of Fashion Designers (CFDA), who named her America's New Fashion
Talent in Accessories. That same year, Spade opened the first
kate spade shop in New York's Soho neighborhood. By 1998,
branch stores were flourishing in Los Angeles and Boston,
and Spade was again honored by the CFDA, this time as Accessory
Designer of the Year.
Today kate spade is thriving, with the original collection
grown to include raincoats, pajamas, scarves, stationery,
and shoes. Despite her success, Spade hasn't lost her sense
of where she came from (each kate spade bag is still named
after a friend or family member), nor her commitment to design
that is always stylish, never trendy.
