Steve Ballmer

Steve Ballmer has full management responsibility for the world's leading manufacturer of software for personal and business computing, with more than 60,000 employees in over 75 subsidiary offices worldwide. Cited by The New York Times for changing the Microsoft culture from “fit in or out” to “openness and respectfulness of others”, Mr. Ballmer has announced a new corporate mission “to enable people and businesses throughout the world to realize their full potential.” A Detroit native, Mr. Ballmer graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and economics and after college worked for two years at Procter & Gamble Co. as an assistant product manager. He left Stanford University Graduate School of Business before graduating, to become the 28th employee of Microsoft. In 2000, he became the company’s CEO. Mr. Ballmer lives in Seattle, Washington.

Carla Cico

Born in Verona, Italy, Ms. Cico speaks five languages, including Mandarin, and for over 15 years, has been a significant player in major telecom acquisitions and service improvement projects in various countries including China, India and Czech Republic. As CEO of Brasil Telecom S.A., she is the first woman in Brazil to have a chief executive position in the telecom industry. Previously, Ms. Cico worked as Director of International Business Operations for STET International, S.p.A., in Rome, where she was involved in international telecom acquisition transactions. She lives in Brasilia, Brazil.


Maxine Clark

Chief Executive Officer, The Build-a-Bear Workshop

Entrepreneur extraordinaire, Maxine Clark honed her ability to spot emerging retail and merchandising trends at the May Department Stores Company, where she formed partnerships with Disney, American Greetings and Mattel. As President of Payless Shoe Source, she developed the retailer into the number one seller of children’s licensed footwear in the world. Since l996, Ms. Clark has devoted her energies to Build-a-Bear Workshop™, a teddy bear-themed experience retail store that combines the universal appeal of plush animals with an interactive assembly line that allows children to create their own huggable companions. The first Build-a-Bear Workshop™ opened in the fall of 97 and Build-a-Bear was named Best New Concept for 1998 by Chain Store Age and the Most Innovative Retailer for 2001 by The National Retail Federation (NRF). The 150-store operation will expand internationally by the end of 2003. Ms. Clark is a member of the Committee of 200 and lives in St. Louis, Missouri.


Pamela J. Craig

Managing Partner, Global Business Operations, Accenture

Pamela J. Craig chairs Accenture's Business Operations Council, which coordinates the company’s policies, procedures and operational interfaces. A member of Accenture’s Executive Committee, Ms. Craig has responsibility for all of the company's support services and geography-based capabilities, managing a $1.4 billion dollar budget and over 7,300 people. She also oversees Accenture's geographic councils, focusing on marketing image, strategy execution and operational issues within Accenture’s geographic units. In addition, she works with Accenture's capability group chief executives to ensure capability group operating effectiveness. She received her MBA from New York University, her AB from Smith College, and joined Accenture in 1982 where she was admitted to the partnership in 1991. Melinda Davis

Esther Dyson

Rita Foley is known for change, innovation and the integration of companies. She is Senior Vice President of MeadWestvaco, a global producer of packaging, coated and specialty papers, consumer and office products and specialty chemicals with annual sales of approximately $8 billion. The company operates in 33 countries and employs more than 30,000 people worldwide. As President of the Consumer Packaging Group, a leading provider of packaging to the media, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic markets, she oversees more than 40 manufacturing operations worldwide. After joining Westvaco, she progressed from CIO to increased line-management responsibilities with oversight of Rigesa, Ltda., Westvaco’s Brazilian subsidiary. Prior to MeadWestvaco, Ms. Foley held executive positions for Harris Lanier, Digital Equipment Corporation and QAD, Inc. Ms. Foley serves on the board of the Council of the Americas, is a member of the Management Policy Council, and Women in Packaging. Ms. Foley is a graduate of Smith College. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.


Joe W. Forehand

Nely Galán

Dubbed the “Tropical Tycoon” by New York Times Magazine, Cuban-born Galán’s career started at WNJU-TV, Telemundo’s flagship station. At age 22, Ms. Galán became the youngest television station manager in the U.S. Since then she has worked with leading media companies and partnered with Fox to produce English and Spanish-language television programming for audiences in the U.S. and Latin America, and bi-lingual multi-media. Ms. Galán produced the telenovela “Empire” and the Bravo Awards and was instrumental in launching the Fox Latin American Channel, Fox Kids Network in Latin America, and Fox Sports Americas. In 1998, she was named President of Entertainment for Telemundo where she struck first-ever deals with hot talents like Ricky Martin and others, and initiated co-branding efforts with MTV and Nickelodeon. Ms. Galán brought the Spanish-language sitcoms “Solo en America” and “Los Beltran” to the U.S. Since 1998, GALAN Entertainment has produced over 450 episodes of programming for the U.S. Latino and international markets and clients include HBO, the Fox Network, UPN, NBC/Telemundo and MTV. Ms. Galán lives in Venice, California.



Jamie S. Gorelick
Vice Chair, Fannie Mae

As part of the Office of the Chairman, Jamie Gorelick shares responsibility for the management of Fannie Mae with emphasis on multi-family rental housing, housing and community development products and initiatives, as well as its legal and regulatory matters. Ranked #1 among organizations committed to demonstrating that diversity works, Fannie Mae is the nation's largest source of funds for home mortgages, with over one trillion dollars in assets. Prior to joining Fannie Mae in May 1997, Ms. Gorelick was Deputy Attorney General of the United States. Mellody Hobson has been named “Global Leader of Tomorrow” by the World Economic Forum in 2001, one of 25 “Next- Generation Global Leaders” by Fortune, and in 1998, one of Working Woman’s “20 under 30”. Ms. Hobson leads Ariel Capital Management, Inc.—a Chicago-based investment management firm specializing in equities with over $10 billion in assets under management. Ms. Hobson is a graduate of Princeton University where she received a Bachelor of Arts from the Woodrow Wilson School of International Relations and Public Policy. General James L. Jones
Former Commandant of the U.S. Marines, now Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces in Europe

Returning to MainEvent by popular demand, General James L. Jones was appointed Supreme Allied Commander, Europe for NATO forces and Commander of the United States European Command in 2003. Prior to this position, he served as Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. General Jones began his career with the Marines after receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1966. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1967, and sent to Vietnam as a Platoon Commander. He has commanded Marine Corps units at every level, platoon through division. General Jones’ career includes posts as Company Commander at Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, DC; Marine Corps Liaison for the United States Senate; Senior Aide to the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps; Service in Operation Provide Comfort in Northern Iraq and Turkey after Desert Storm; and, prior to his assignment as Commandant, Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. General Jones' personal decorations include: the Defense Distinguished Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Silver Star Medal, Legion of Merit with four gold stars, Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V", and the Combat Action Ribbon. General Jones currently resides in Mons, Belgium.


Ellen J. Kullman

Leader of one of DuPont’s five growth platforms, Ellen Kullman’s mission is making DuPont the global market leader in providing solutions for people, property and operations in the area of safety, security and protection. Her diverse management responsibilities include leadership for DuPont Advanced Fiber Systems, DuPont Chemical Solutions Enterprise, DuPont Nonwovens, DuPont Safety Resources and DuPont Surfaces. Joanna Lau

On a mission to fund and foster new ideas and companies, Joanna Lau is founder and CEO of LAU Technologies, located in Littleton, Massachusetts. In 1990, Ms. Lau acquired a small defense manufacturing company in Massachusetts and grew it into three business units providing systems integration, development and delivery of high-end electronic systems for military applications and secure identification and surveillance systems. LAU spun out and took public one of its divisions, Viisage Technology. Viisage serves the secure identification industry and provides driver license systems in 13 states utilizing patented facial recognition technology. Under Ms. Lau’s leadership, LAU Technologies has earned awards and recognition from the U.S. Army, Prime Contractors and the Small Business Administration. Ms. Lau herself has received numerous business and civic awards including the National Entrepreneur of the Year Award sponsored by INC and Ernst & Young LLP, and is also a member of the Young President Organization and the Committee of 200. She lives in Concord, Massachusetts.


Barbara Miller - Host

Mary Minnick

A 19-year veteran of Coca-Cola, Mary Minnick commands one of the most challenging roles in the Coca-Cola system, responsible for generating nearly a third of the company’s operating revenue. She oversees operations in 38 countries throughout Asia that refresh over half the worlds population, from the critically important Japan market and developing giants India and China, to tiny Pacific nations, and provides total system employment to over 100,000 people. Ms. Minnick has been cited as one of Fortune’s “50 Most Powerful Women in International Business”. Ms. Minnick spent eight years outside the US, the past seven living and working in Asia, including assignments as President of Coca-Cola Japan and before that president of the South Pacific division, based in Australia. Although based in Atlanta, Ms. Minnick spends the majority of her time in Asia. As an Executive Vice President, she is also a key player in developing strategy for Coca- Cola. Ms. Minnick holds a Masters in Business Administration from Duke University and lives in Atlanta, Georgia.


Pat Mitchell

In February 2000, Pat Mitchell became the first woman and first producer to serve as CEO of the nation’s largest and only non-commercial broadcasting service. A former network correspondent, independent producer and Time Warner executive, she oversees the operations of a $1 billion national enterprise made up of 350 member stations whose mission is to enrich the lives of all Americans while strengthening social capital in the communities they serve. Recognized as a proven business leader and respected executive in the entertainment industry, she was named by Forbes magazine as one of the “Magnetic 40” corporate executives in America, included in Electronic Media’s “12 to Watch,” Hollywood Reporter’s “Top 40 Women in Entertainment,” and named “Woman of the Year” by Women in Cable and Telecommunications. With a history of activism in her community and in non-profit organizations, Ms. Mitchell serves on the Women’s Leadership Advisory Council of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and the Board of Trustees of the Mayo Foundation. Luciano Respini
President, Dow Europe, Chairman of the Global Geographic Council, Corporate Vice President of Marketing and Sales

Luciano Respini, a driving force in the expansion of Dow Europe, joined the company in Milan, Italy, in the financial department. He subsequently led Dow’s financial operations in many companies, progressively moving to Thailand, France, Yugoslavia, Latin America and places in between, and was later Financial Vice President for the Dow Europe area, located in Horgen, Switzerland. He then moved to the business side as Vice President for Performance Products and the Chemical business for Dow Europe. Next, Mr. Respini headed to Brazil as President of the Dow Latin American area, and returned to Switzerland to lead Dow Europe. In 2000 he became Chairman of the newly established Global Geographic Council, representing geography in the Corporate Operating Board, and is responsible for building customer relationships around the world in his role as Corporate Vice President, Marketing and Sales. Mr. Respini holds a doctor's degree in Economics from the Università Cattolica of Milan and speaks Italian, French, English and Portuguese. He lives in Zurich, Switzerland.


Ivy Ross
SVP of Worldwide Barbie/Girls Design, Mattel, cited as Mattel’s ingenious right-brain designer and effective left-brain executive

Ivy Ross oversees design and development of all Mattel products and packaging for girls, including Barbie dolls and other unique brands, accounting for a total of approximately $2 billion in revenue. Ms. Ross also oversees the model shop, sound lab, chem lab and sculpting functions for all Mattel products. In 2002, Ross created Project Platypus, a dynamic process for bringing out human potential in an organization through the synthesis of collaborative experiences resulting in new business opportunities. Ross’ background, including a stint at Harvard Business School, spans two decades in fashion and design at Calvin Klein, Liz Claiborne, Bausch & Lomb and Swatch Watch. She founded two independent design firms and a retail store cited as “the most influential home furnishings store of the decade”. Her innovative jewelry is displayed in the permanent collection of 12 international museums, including the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., the Victorian Albert Museum in London and the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York City, among others. She lives in Manhattan Beach, California.


Alastair Stewart

With a career in television news spanning a quarter of a century, Alastair Stewart is one of the most recognized faces in television news in the UK. He presents London News Network's flagship news and features program "London Tonight," as well as a number of special programs including “Police, Camera, Action!” the top rated factual program on ITV; the “Carlton Debates” and Carlton’s quiz show, “King of the Castle”. Prior to joining LNN, Mr. Stewart was a presenter at ITN News, where he was the first British reporter to be broadcast live from the liberated Kuwait City during the Gulf War, and is one of the few people who have presented all of ITN's main news programs. An active supporter and advocate for various charity works, Mr. Stewart is a Patron of Lord Mayor Treloar College for disabled students, the mental health charity, SANE, and the medical research charity, HOPE; and a vice Patron of the mental health charities The Zito Trust and The Mental Health Foundation. Mr. Stewart lives in London, England.


Yukako Uchinaga
Vice President, Software Development Laboratory, IBM Japan, Ltd.

One of the most spectacular IT success stories of a woman in a multinational firm is that of Yukako Uchinaga. Cited as one of Fortune’s “50 Most Powerful Women in International Business”, Ms. Uchinaga is the only woman to serve on the Board of Directors of IBM Japan. A technical genius, Ms. Uchinaga has been a leader in encouraging the promotion of women as managers at IBM and she serves as a role model for encouraging more women to pursue careers in the technological industries. Since joining IBM in 1971, Ms. Uchinaga has played a multitude of roles include Manager of Programming Development, AP (Asia Pacific) Director of Asia Pacific Products, Board Member of IBM Japan and General Manager, Cross Industry, of IBM AP (Asia Pacific). Among her research contributions, Ms. Uchinaga led the team that produced the double-byte character set for software developers in Asian languages, paving the way for the world to do business in Asia. Ms. Uchinaga, who holds a degree in Physics from the University of Tokyo, lives in Tokyo, Japan.


Theodore Zeldin
Oxford Dean and noted author

Cited as one of the “40 world figures whose ideas are likely to have a lasting relevance to the new millennium,” Theodore Zeldin graduated from London University at the age of 17. At age 30 he became Dean of St. Antony's College at Oxford, where he helped to establish the College as the University's new center for international studies. In his forties, he published the 2000-page Oxford History of Modern Europe (reissued as the History of French Passions), prompting Le Point magazine to call him “the most popular Englishman in France,” and Time magazine to name him "the world's leading authority on Frenchness." His books: Happiness, An Intimate History of Humanity and Conversation, Future of Work, and Conversation: How Talk Can Change Our Lives, have expanded his research to the art of living on a global scale. Mr. Zeldin has founded the Oxford Muse, a foundation whose purpose is to expand people's experience and abilities with less superficial personal relationships, and to develop ways of working that are more life-enhancing. He is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and lives in Oxford, England.
